Art by Big Island Artist Ray McWade

3 Apr

Ray has been painting long before he came to this island so you can imagine he has explored many subjects. You can see some of his work at the Hilton Waikaloa Art Gallery.  He is now living at one of the most beautiful places on the island with a view that inspires. Ray’s home is far enough around the coast to avoid the vog and at the same time have exceptional tranquility. He is a good distance from “the city” of Kailua Kona.  Enjoy his work. I’m especially fond of the painting we were able to publish in the Big Island Arts Annual. I that painting Ray brings the oneness of all people into the image of two men side by side, Native Hawaiian and Native American.  In the painting below I leave you to your imagination as to the message it carries.

Orchid by Joy Nemiroff

I have friends who could expound for days about orchids. They are so wonderful that they capture our fantasy mind. In our recent show at Big Island Art Farm Joy Nemiroff entered her work with this simple title, Orchid. Her work is not simple and then again… She has been exposed to the arts of Japan by a visit to her son who was living in Japan. She fell in love with an artistic style called oshie, this can be described as a traditional Japanes fabric art with elevated dimension. It is produced with a firm backing and carefully selected fabric to evoke a painting in fabric with raised features. It is an art that cold migrate to the west if you want to learn from the Japanese tradition. Joy absorbed it and has done four works of oshie. One of her works that has not been exhibited yet is a volcano landscape. She has studied this landscape daily from her walks in the land at Volcano National Park. Her home is near so she feels the rumbles.

You may already know Joy as an acomplished astrologer and Runes translator par excelance. What a great woman and friend!
